Community Council elections – update May 2023

After representations to Stirling Council by ourselves and elected Councillors, we have been advised by Stirling Council’s governance department that a new round of Community Council elections are going to be held in late May/early June.

We hope this will allow us to re-form the Community Council without further delay. This change of tune by Stirling Council means we should not now have to raise a community petition after all, so we welcome the change.

Once again, if any member of the community is interested in standing as a candidate to volunteer for the Community Council, we would ask that they get in contact with us at thornhillblairdrummondcc@gmail.com

Your Guide to the Thornhill Community Gathering

Where?

  • Thornhill Community Hall.

When?

  • Sat 20th May, 12 noon – 4.00pm.
  • Come for the start and stay as long as you can.

What kind of meeting is it?

  • It’s a community event led by Jamie Hamilton and Roland Playle, Community Chartering Network.
  • There will be conversations and discussions round the table.
  • Plenty of maps around to trigger thoughts and fresh ideas too.
  • It’ll be great chance to catch up with old friends and make new ones.

Why get together?

  • It is important to have as many residents as possible inputting into our plans so they truly reflect the views of the community and carry sufficient weight to influence the Local Development Plan.
  • It will also provide effective guidelines for future decisions about our village.

Who Can Come?

  • All residents of Thornhill and the surrounding area are welcome.

What about Young People?

  • There will be a special area in the Hall so young people from 9 years can contribute their views.
  • Simple activities for younger children, crafts, books, games etc will be available in the meeting room but will need to be supervised by their parents.
  • No children under 16 will be admitted unless accompanied by an adult.

Will there be food and refreshments?

  • Yes, there will be break at 2.00pm for a bite to eat/late lunch, with refreshments available all day.
  • Thanks to Stirling Council for the Community Pride Fund award to support this event.

What if I can’t attend the Gathering on 20th May?

  • If you can’t come on the day you can sign up to be kept informed about future Thornhill Plan meetings, developments or agreements.
  • Sign up to our mailing list here.
  • Information provided will not be shared with other organisations or used for anything other than the purposes stated.
  • Just provide your contact details and consent to be contacted on the form.

Thank you – see you on the 20th.

Community Council Elections – Update

Stirling Council has advised us that not enough valid nomination forms were received by the deadline for us to form a Community Council. For that reason, the Thornhill and Blair Drummond Community Council has been stood down – for the time being.

However, we have enough volunteers to form a Community Council, and are in the process of establishing a route by which the Community Council can be stood back up, as soon as possible.

It is important that the Community Council is in existence, not just as your conduit to have community matters represented to Stirling Council, and elected Councillors, but because the Community Council is a statutory consultee which legally must be consulted on planning matters in the area. This is particularly relevant at the moment with the proposed major development by Inverdunning currently being at the appeal stage.

We have asked Stirling Council for guidance in re-establishing our Community Council. Our preferred option is that they accept the nominations from the current volunteers immediately, allowing the Community Council to re-form straight away. Failing this, we aim to petition for a Community Council to be formed, relying on Local Government legislation to do so. This will take a matter of weeks.

What this means for YOU:

1. We may be asking the community to support our petition to re-form the Community Council. This is likely to be in the next week or so. Please support the petition!

2. Please spread the word – we know not everyone in the community has access to social media, so let everyone know what is happening.

3. We are always looking for more volunteers to be on the Community Council. If you are interested in finding out more of what is involved (it doesn’t take much time or effort) please get in touch with any (former) Community Council member, via the TBDCC Facebook page, or emailing thornhillblairdrummondcc@gmail.com

Tablet Computers Lending Service

Did you know it’s not just books you can borrow from Stirling Council Libraries – users can now stay connected online following the launch of a free tablet lending service.

Any member of Stirling Council Libraries can now borrow a tablet and MiFi with free, unlimited data for up to three weeks. The innovative service is available across all 15 libraries as well as the two mobile libraries.

MiFis, which are wireless routers, are provided in partnership with Connecting Scotland and allow users to stay online at home and on the move.

Residents who wish to become a member of Stirling Council Libraries and access the service should go to their local branch with two forms of identification, one of which must have their current address, and speak to a member of staff.

Further information about the tablet lending service is available by emailing Angela Short, Digital Inclusion Officer, at shortan@stirling.gov.uk or calling 01786 237 547.

PATHS WORK PARTY THIS WEEKEND, SATURDAY 1st APRIL

(Definitely not an April Fool, all hands needed!)
Following on from everyone’s efforts last month, we still have to ‘top dress’ the second half of the path we made, using the finer material. This will involve barrowing loads from the bottom end of the path where it will be deposited, then raking etc. It would be really good to get this job done in one go, so the more the merrier……

Meet at the top end of the path (junction with South Common) at 10am armed with barrows, shovels, rakes etc. There will be cake.
At the moment the weather doesn’t look too bad but if that changes we’ll rearrange.
